Was My Course Renamed?
Learn more about course name changes coming to SBCC
The state has made it easier for students to transfer credits between schools by using a new system which at Santa Barbara City College we are calling ‘Was My Course Renamed’? to ensure that students can easily identify courses that meet equivalent transfer requirements across all California Community Colleges.
This new system also makes transferring to universities like the University of California (UC) or California State University (CSU) more straightforward. It ensures that courses are consistent across colleges, helping students navigate their academic path with confidence.
What Does This Mean?
When registering for Fall 2025 classes, students should look up the new course number as listed in the table here. So, for example, a student enrolling in Math 117 - Elementary Statistics will need to look for STAT C1000 instead.
Additional Info
Students will see the old course for any classes taken during or before Summer 2025. On or after Fall 2025, students will see the new common course numbering system. All course numbers start with a "C" in the catalog number. Example is shown below for Statistics. The old course numbering system: Math 117. The new course is STAT C1000.
It is important to you if you have taken courses at any California Community College prior to Fall 2025 because course numbers and titles have changed. You want to fully understand what courses you have completed and you do not want to accidentally repeat the same course.
When colleges update courses, they do it during an academic year. Fall 2025 is part of the 2025-2026 academic year. The State of CA has required all colleges to begin phase 1 in Fall 2025, so each phase will roll out courses during the fall semesters.
Some course prefixes have been changed to align with what is common throughout the state (e.g. ENG is now ENGL)

Efforts are underway to align course articulation across California Community Colleges, as well as with the University of California and California State University systems, for Cal-GETC, major preparation, and course-to-course equivalencies. However, students are encouraged to consult ASSIST or speak with a counselor to confirm how the course will apply to their specific academic plan.
